“Many of the fears people still have about dentures are based on older experiences or outdated designs,” says Alex Hupka, owner of Esthetics Denture Studio Inc.
These misconceptions often cause people to delay treatment, even when they are already struggling with missing teeth or declining oral health.
According to Statistics Canada, about 17% of Canadian adults report their oral health as fair or poor, reflecting how common these concerns remain across the population.
But modern denture care has come a long way in recent decades and many of the assumptions people still have today no longer reflect what properly designed dentures can actually offer.
Myth #1: Dentures always look fake
One of the most common fears among patients is that dentures will be obvious or artificial-looking.
In reality, modern dentures are highly customized to suit each patient’s facial features, bite and overall appearance. Factors like tooth size, colour, shape and facial proportions all play an important role in achieving natural-looking results.
Advances in dental technology and facial analysis also enable practitioners to create dentures that more closely mimic the appearance and function of natural teeth.
While most of the dentures being produced and scanned in the general market could provide an artificial look, “experience and artisanship create a natural, indistinguishable beauty,” says Hupka. “This is created using cephalometric measurements and aesthetic considerations.”
Myth #2: Dentures are uncomfortable and painful
While there can be an adjustment period, properly fitted dentures should not cause ongoing pain or interfere with daily life.
Comfort depends heavily on accurate measurements, proper bite alignment and how well the dentures work with the physics of the patient’s jaw movement and anatomy.
This is especially important because every mouth is different. A denture that is poorly designed or improperly fitted can affect chewing, speech and overall comfort.
Myth #3: You can’t eat normally with dentures
Many people worry they will need to permanently avoid certain foods after getting dentures, but most patients adjust more quickly than expected.
“For experienced denture wearers, eating with new dentures can feel natural almost immediately,” says Hupka. “First-time full denture wearers may take a few weeks to fully adapt, while partial denture patients often adjust within a day.”
As comfort and function improve, many patients regain confidence in both eating and social situations.
Myth #4: Dentures are one-size-fits-all
Modern dentures are not generic appliances. They are custom prosthetics designed around each individual patient.
Experience and technical knowledge can make a significant difference in how natural dentures look and function. Practitioners with a broader understanding of dental mechanics are often better equipped to create prosthetics that work alongside existing crowns, implants or orthodontic treatments.
Having an in-house laboratory also allows for greater quality control throughout the fabrication process.
“When other practitioners send out their denture work, they are at the mercy of the dental lab,” Hupka says. “This is never the same as having a vertically integrated, highly experienced artisan denturist create the prosthetic in-house.”
Choosing the right denture provider
For patients considering dentures, experience and long-term care should be just as important as appearance.
A proper assessment goes beyond replacing missing teeth. It should include a full oral examination, evaluation of jaw structure and a review of medications that may affect saliva flow and denture fit. Ongoing maintenance and recall appointments also play an important role, since oral structures naturally change over time.
Patients should also ask what kind of aftercare and support are available after treatment, including warranties, adjustments and home care guidance.
